Perfect for around the house communication. Get rechargebles though. August 28, 2010 Lake Waters (Ohio) I bought these essentially for in-home communication between floors of a home. For this use they work flawlessly. I have experimented a couple times using a unit indoors and the other unit outdoors and really only get about a half mile range in a level wooded rural area.
They are primarily used for the 'call' alert button but the voice transmission works quite well, very clear.
Cons: For older users with not so steady hands, the channel can easily be changed while attempting to use the Call button. This was a bit of an annoyance at first as any slip-up which changes the channel makes communication impossible because the channel of one unit has changed. It would be nice to have a 'Lock' mode but there isn't. My remedy was to tape a trimmed off q-tip shaft vertically next to the channel buttons which makes them more difficult to accidentally press down.
As someone else has stated, you really need rechargables to use these. After much searching of reviews and prices I ended up getting 4 four packs of the Rayovac 4.0's and have been very happy with their length of charge. I already had a very modest quality 4 battery Rayovac charger (Model 33 I think) which charges them fine in about 3 hours. The batteries were very reasonable (I used Bedford Power). You'd be crazy not to buy them on-line from the prices I've seen in the discount stores.
The size is really small which makes them easy to carry around and for older people with small/weak hands to use.
Solid July 25, 2010 Robert J. Flick 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Pros: Very cheap and they do exactly what you want them to do. Audio is crisp and they are quite sturdy. We were able to afford 12 for the staff of our nonprofit, and they definitely did the trick.
Cons: Battery life is shorter than would be desired. As they take batteries instead of charging, this means a lot of batteries...I advise using rechargeable batteries and a fast recharger if you'll be using them heavily.
deception July 20, 2010 mauricio gonzalez I opened the package as soon as I received the product, nearly 40 days ago. I read carefully the instructions before using the radios but after 5 minutes one quit transmitting while the other one quit receiving.Uniden has no sales representative in Chile and there is no way I can send this product to be serviced locally.A real shame.I would like to know about your refund policies.
Great short-range walkie-talkies July 14, 2010 R. Adams (Hawaii) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the third and fourth pair of Uniden walkie-talkies I've purchased. I take care of my 91-year-old mother and the Unidens have provided critical communication on several occasions, particularly when I've been working outside or walking our dogs. We have used this type of Uniden walkie-talkie for more than 6 years.
First and foremost, they are small and light and the only walkie-talkies Mom can hold and operate (she is a small lady with tiny hands.) We started with the 3-mile range, then the 5-mile, and now the 12-mile as Uniden changed design. Each model has been satisfactory within the neighborhood, but because of the lack of line-of-sight areas I haven't been able to test Uniden's 12-mile claim under ideal conditions. However, expect the range to be significantly less than claimed if there is anything between the units, particularly solid things like terrain and buildings.
Battery life is important and the 12-mile units use somewhat more power than the shorter range models did. However, after much trial and error, I have found that RayOVac NiMH Hybrid and 4.0 rechargeable batteries will provide more than 24 hours of operation, including a modest amount of transmitting (which uses more battery power.) NO other batteries, even DieHard and Energizer NiMH rechargeables, operate the units for 24 or more hours. I think I read somewhere in the enclosed literature that Uniden rates the running time as 22 hours on regular alkaline batteries. Using recharageable AAA batteries saves a LOT of money (we use these 24/7/365) and once-a-day battery change is very convenient.
CONS: Only real problem is that the belt clip is designed with two small plastic tabs that can break off if the unit gets caught on something. I also had one unit that had an intermittent squelch problem but all the other units we've had have operated perfectly.
Fortunately we live in a rural area and have found several channels that are as good as private communication frequencies. Except for when we're using them, they remain totally silent. Audio quality is excellent and the range of volume control is such that at maximum volume I can just hear enough to know when Mom is trying to call me even when using a power lawn mower or other gas-powered yard care equipment (even when wearing ear plugs.)
Once again, Amazon's price was unbeatable because they qualified for SuperSaver Shipping .. altho I had to buy 2 pairs to meet the requirments. I'm very happy to have what amounts to a spare pair for only a few dollars more than a single pair plus paid shipping. Even without the shipping, the price is very competitive and better than I was able to find on eBay and other sites.
Thanks Amazon.com!
Perfect size but be careful June 16, 2010 S. J. Church (Whitewater, WI) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
This product is the perfect size but if you want to use the GMRS channels (over half of them available) you have to obtain a license from the FCC which will cost about $85 for my use I'm sticking with the FCR channels but it would have been nice if I would have understood what I was purchasing to begin with.
