Practical, Tested, and Affordable Survival Preparation September 10, 2010 Mark E. Sanders Cody Lundin is gaining wider recognition these days with a survival show on cable. Unlike too many survival "experts", his knowledge comes almost entirely from hardscrabble experience. He has made the mistakes, so you don't have to.
He devotes several chapters to getting your mind in the right place for survival, since most deaths during and after disaster are more from bad decisions or just 'freaking out' than lack of food, shelter, or survival gear.
The rest of the book gives an extremely handy and thorough outline on how to rank your priorities for best survival odds. Wherever possible, he shows you how to perform tasks in the cheapest, simplest "MacGiver" way. You won't need tens of thousands in fancy gear to implement his suggestions.
By way of background, Cody runs aboriginal style survival courses in Arizona. He and his students get a chance to live what he preaches in his book. So there's very little-- if any-- theoretical conjecture here.
I have reread When All Hell Breaks Loose several times, and refer to it often as my family gradually prepares for "whatever".
My favorite aspect of this book, apart from the excellent info and conversational writing style, is Cody's insistence that correct survival preparation should not turn you into a paranoid lunatic holed up in a cabin with some baked beans and an AK-47, but rather allow you and your family to happily go about your life after developing your own plan for "what if".
This is one book that should be in your bug-out pack.
The Best Survival Book on the Market! September 7, 2010 Linda Fish (Cedar Crest, NM USA) Besides excellent information, this book is entertaining! I love how Cody combines pictures, jokes, and survival tips into the best hand book for any emergency situation. This is a must have reference book for all of us! No fluff here, Cody speaks from experience. I learned a lot and feel pretty confident that I could get me, and mine, to safety with a clear head and a few simple tools on hand to grab quickly. Pre Planning is the key and Cody lays it out step by step.
Great overview of general urban survival strategy September 3, 2010 Aaron Williams I read this book a year ago and it forever changed the way I pictured surviving in an urban meltdown/apocalypse/etc. If you don't get Cody's sense of humor & style, the book may read a bit funny to you. It gave me many new ideas on how to handle many unpleasant situations. I wish he would go into more detail about his natural home design, but that would be another book.
Information you won't find in other survival books August 30, 2010 Irvin Kanode (Tempe, AZ USA) I've backpacked and camped for years, have read several survival books, and watched all the survival shows. Yet, I've learned from this book. It offers a unique perspective. Some of what the negative reviews call psychobabble, I found to be informative and thought provoking--although I won't adopt Cody's lifestyle.
It's a good first book for urban disaster preparation but is also a good supplement to a larger library. It's not as useful for wilderness survival although there is info on pasteurizing water at 149°F and/or using UV from the sun while debunking the need to boil drinking water for 20 minutes.
sweet August 27, 2010 Batman Got this book for my brother and he says he loves it. Shipping from the seller was great!
