Coleman Exponent 2-CR123A Lithium Flashlight and Collapsible Lantern Combo

The Exponent is equipped with such features as energy-saving Smart Switch technology, a rotating collar, and multiple red LEDs for improved night vision. With Smart Switch technology, the flashlight cycles through the high, low, and emergency strobe settings with each press of the pushbutton. However, if the flashlight is left on any setting for a few seconds or more, the next push of the button will turn the flashlight off. The rotating collar, meanwhile, lets you easily switch from the primary white LED to the red LEDs, or you can lock the lamp so it doesn't accidentally turn on in your pack. And thanks to the five 3mm red LEDs, you can see your surroundings far better in total darkness.

Other details include a durable, weather-resistant milled-aluminum body for rugged use, a convenient tail-cap lanyard that attaches to a key ring or pack, and two CR123A lithium batteries (included). The flashlight offers the following run times: 6 hours on low and 1.5 hours on high (white LED); and 50 hours on low and 15 hours on high (red LEDs). The Exponent weighs 5.3 ounces by itself (with battery), while the collapsible lantern adds an extra 1.2 ounces.

More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark.

In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure.
